COSMETIC TATTOO
What is cosmetic tattooing?
Cosmetic tattooing, also known as semi-permanent makeup, is a precise technique in which pigment is placed into the upper layers of the skin to enhance the appearance of the brows or lips. Unlike traditional body tattooing, it uses specialised pigments, fine needles and a softer, more natural-looking approach designed to complement your features. The pigment fades gradually over time, which is why it is described as semi-permanent, and top-up treatments are usually recommended to maintain the look.
At our North Sydney clinic, we offer cosmetic tattooing for both the brows and the lips. Every treatment is customised to your face shape, skin tone, natural colouring and personal style. Our Dermal Clinician Renee performs the treatments. She has performed over 2000 of these procedures during her career and specializes in lip blush tattooing.
Brow tattooing-
Brow tattooing can help define, shape and fill the brows, and is commonly chosen by people with sparse, patchy or uneven brows, or those who would like to save time on daily brow makeup. Depending on your skin, your goals and the look you prefer, your clinician may recommend one of several techniques, such as:
- Hair stroke technique: fine, hair-like strokes placed to replicate natural brow hairs
- Powder or ombre technique: a soft, shaded effect, similar to brow makeup
- Combination technique: a blend of hair strokes and soft shading for added definition
Before any pigment is placed, your clinician will map and design your brows with you, taking into account your natural bone structure, symmetry and facial proportions. You will approve the shape and colour before your treatment begins.
Lip tattooing-
Lip tattooing, often called lip blush, is used to enhance the colour, shape and definition of the lips. It can help balance uneven lip colour, soften a pale lip tone, define the lip border or create a subtle, natural tint. Lip treatments can be tailored from a soft, natural result to a more defined look. Renee will help you choose a colour that suits your skin tone and complements your features.
What to expect during your treatment
Your appointment begins with a consultation, where your clinician discusses your goals, medical history, skin type and any concerns. A topical numbing product is generally applied to help keep you comfortable, and your clinician will explain what sensations to expect. Treatment is then performed in a clean, sterile environment using single-use, disposable needles and hygienic practices. Appointments generally take 1-2 hours, including consultation, design and treatment, though this varies.
Healing and top-up treatments
Your skin will go through a healing process over the following weeks. Colour may look stronger at first and settle to a softer, more natural shade as the skin heals. A follow-up appointment, usually [4 to 8] weeks later, allows your clinician to review healing and refine your result. Longevity varies between individuals, depending on factors such as skin type, sun exposure, skincare and lifestyle, and colour refreshes are usually needed over time.
Is cosmetic tattooing right for me?
Cosmetic tattooing is not suitable for everyone. Treatment may not be recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active skin infections, cold sores (for lip treatments), certain skin conditions, a tendency to keloid scarring, or take certain medications. A thorough consultation allows us to assess whether treatment is appropriate for you. Anyone with a history of cold sores may need preventative medication before lip treatment.
